Report for November 2002
Complaints have been received about the amount of litter outside
the Co-op and King George Playing Fields. Also again re the litter bins
regularly overflowing in Mede Way Play Area.
We have suggested that well constructed anti-litter signs be
installed with details of penalties.
We have investigated two complaints of alleged possible attempted burglary
in local dwellings.
There has been criminal
damage to vehicles in the Quay and Queens Road areas.
We note from recent crime figures that Wivenhoe continues to be the or one of
the safest towns in Essex.
POLICING
We are facing difficult times in respect of policing
when their services will be required elsewhere. This is fully appreciated.
However Wivenhoe has not had its fair share of police activity over
the past two years despite promises to the contrary by Inspector Butler.
The lack of visible policing has been a continuous complaint from members
of the community.
YOUTH
There appears to have been a reduction in youths
congregating together drinking alcohol and using illegal drugs, both in
the KGV Park and other areas. However I continue to be concerned about
certain youths who appear to lead others astray. This is being
examined before their actions result in more serious consequences for
themselves and others.
ROAD SAFETY
Beverley Gould of Colchester Borough Council
carefully examined our Report on Road Safety concerns in Wivenhoe. Mrs
Gould took the time and troubles to visit all the locations referred to in
the report before the meeting of the full committee that she attended. The
majority of concerns were agreed with before the meeting. Others were
discussed and to be examined. Unfortunately Mrs Gould became ill after
attending the meeting and will be off work for a number of weeks. Due to
staff shortages within her department the issues of concern have not been
acted upon.
Our Community Police Officer has issued a number of
speeding tickets following receipt of this report in the areas of concern.
STREET LIGHTING
I am conducting a full street survey in Wivenhoe.
Urgent requirements are being addressed immediately, i.e. street lighting
outside the Broomgrove School no: 4 and 4A are not operating. Good street
lighting reduces crime and the fear of crime and improves road safety.
COOPERATION
On behalf of all the Committee, we wish to voice our
appreciation of the continued support of all the Wivenhoe Town Council
staff and all the Town Councillors.
Working in such a partnership and with other agencies
as Colchester Borough ‘Road Safety’ and the Police promotes and
provides a safer community.
Ken Rogers
Chairman, Wivenhoe Community Safety and NW Committee
WORKING TOGETHER WE CAN REDUCE CRIME AND THE FEAR OF
CRIME.
LOCKS - Choose minimum of five levers - lock should display British
Standards 'kitemark.'
TIME SWITCHES - time switches are available to programme your lighting to
switch on and off. Also exterior lighting with movement detectors (PIR)
both systems act as deterrent. Obtainable from your local electrical shop
