Go Green in the Garden with Colchester Borough Councils

Free Trees for Years Initiative 2009

Trees for Years 2009 will take place on Saturday January 24th. Members of the public will be able to come along and collect their free trees from Rowan House car park (off Sheepen Road , Colchester ) from 10.00am – 3pm and plant them on their own property.

All properties must be in the Colchester Borough.  Each resident, school, community group and Parish/Town Council will have to provide their postcode and property number so the distribution can be monitored.

To help promote ‘grow your own food’ this years selection also includes two species of fruit bushes, Raspberries and Blackcurrant.

In total there will be nine different native tree species available, suitable for all garden sizes.  These are:

Acer campestre – Field Maple

Betula pendula – Silver Birch

Corylus avellana - Hazel

Prunus padus – Bird Cherry

Cornus alba ‘Sibirica’ - Dogwood

Eleagnus augustifolia - Quicksilver

Guelder Rose – Viburnum opulus

Raspberry Canes

Blackcurrant Canes

Cultivation guidance will be available so that trees can be selected, taking into account the ultimate size and form of mature trees or visit www.colchester.gov.uk and follow the links to see more information on the Trees for Years Initiative 2009.

If you are a School, Community Group, Town or Parish Council please register your interest to attend by contacting Bob Penny , Parks and Recreation Manager on 01206 282903 or Bob.penny@colchester.gov.uk
