  How does treatment work?

We offer an intergrative approach to psychological therapy, using a range of techniques that have been found to work. These can include

á              Helping people to think differently about their problems

á              Working out practical means of managing their problems

á              Learning to deal in different ways with upsetting situations

á              Recognising and changing problematic patterns of behaviour and styles of thinking

á              Improving self-esteem and self-worth

á              Setting clear goals

á              Understanding the effects of past events on current problems

What treatment involves

á              There will be an initial assessment meeting where you discuss your problem with the psychologist.

á              After that, there will usually be another meeting where a plan of treatment is worked out.

á              Treatment usually involves a series of weekly hour-long sessions, although sessions may be less often as your problem gets better.

á              The length of treatment depends on the problem.

á              Successful treatment requires the client to be actively involved and motivated to change.

á              The ending of treatment is planned so that both psychologist and client are satisfied with the outcome.

á              Follow-up sessions may be agreed.

á              Treatment is confidential to the client.

What treatment costs

á              £40 per hour session with reduced rates for students, OAPs, unwaged, children and other low-income groups.

á              Initial consultation and assessment usually takes two sessions.

á              Some improvement may be seen in as few as five sessions, but can take much longer.

á              Most treatments are planned to take less than 30 sessions, depending upon what the client needs.
