SOPHIE IVES
Wivenhoe
Sophie Ives trained in
Fine Art at Brighton, where she began making murals using big black and
white drawings. She found that she was not getting the results she wanted
quickly enough by working from the sketches and photographs she had made
of close-ups of "forgotten places" such as pipes or drawing
pins. When these ordinary shapes were blown up to a human scale, they took
on a strange beauty and appeared to be floating in space. She at once
transferred from portrait painting to photography. Continuing to play with
scale, she finds the unexpectedly organic, even human, forms that emerge
more important than colour.
