PAUL RUMSEY
Wivenhoe

Paul Rumsey's powerful and disturbing drawings admit to the influence of Francisco Goya and Hieronymus Bosch in their subject matter and their contemplation of the darker side. This is, however, balanced by his visual wit and satyrical humour.

His knowledge and appreciation of past masters is matched by his skill as a draughtsman in his chosen mediums of charcoal or pen and ink. His work has been shown in many mixed exhibitions and he has had ten solo shows, including four at the Chappel Galleries.

It has earned him many awards: Drawing Prize at the South Bank Picture Show, Royal Festival Hall, London in 1988, 1991 and 1992; prizes at Drawings for All, Gainsborough's House, Sudbury in 1994 and 1996 as well as the Lady Evershed Drawing Prize at the Eastern Open the same year.
