The Wivenhoe Encyclopedia

Gillian Baker

I was born in Gateshead in the north east in 1955 and have recently moved to Wivenhoe from Durham City where I lived since 1985.

I trained as a graphic designer at Newcastle upon Tyne Polytechnic, 1973-76 and then became a postgraduate student at the Royal College of Art in London, 1976-79. Following that I completed a PGCE course in Art Education at Leicester Polytechnic.

Since 1980 I have taught at colleges of further education and from 1996 for the Workers' Educational Association and for various community groups. This has enabled me to teach a wide variety of students of all ages and backgrounds. I have taught A level and GCSE Art and Design, certificate courses including Art and Craft for adults with learning difficulties, workshops for unemployed adults, people coping with mental health problems and children on community projects.

I am currently a WEA tutor for the Essex Community Programme and I am planning to offer courses to local people in Wivenhoe.

Exhibitions have included: Hatton Gallery, Newcastle University; University of Northumbria Gallery; joint exhibition at the Mall, Crook Civic Centre, County Durham; solo exhibition at the Durham Art Gallery. Participated in Durham City Visual Arts Festival; Year of the Visual Arts; International Women's Day Celebrations, Stanley Civic Hall, County Durham and also held workshops.
