The
Paw Gallery Summer Exhibition
A stunning dining-room interior and
sculpture garden create the theme of The Paw Gallery Summer Exhibition which
opens on Saturday 19th June and runs to Sunday 4th
July, 2004.
A dining-room has been fitted with
an oak floor and table by Chas Croc.
Chas, who lives in Wivenhoe, began making furniture twenty four
years ago whilst still a student at Essex University. He
works only in hard wood, mostly oak, which he sources himself from France.
His real speciality is staircases, which he claims are “easy once
you know how” but he makes anything in hard wood from oak conservatories
to walnut cabinets. With the experience he has gained over the years, he
has developed a style of his own, with clear lines, good proportions and
above all perfect craftsmanship.
The quietly elegant pottery on the
dining-room table is made by potter Sylvia Dales. Sylvia work in
ash-glazed stoneware and is inspired by classic forms and Chinese and
Korean art. She has been producing beautiful pottery for over twenty five
years and has recently been selected to become a member of the Crafts and
Potters Association. Complementing the dining–room table are chairs by
furniture maker Dylan Pym who discovered his love of making things
whilst working as a shepherd in Polstead. Trained at Suffolk College,
Dylan specialises in local hardwood which he planks and seasons at his
workshop. He uses traditional techniques and the resulting chairs are
remarkably comfortable.
To complete the dining room there are
paintings by artist Arabella Shand who studied at Colchester
Institute and has exhibited extensively in East Anglia, London and in the
west country. Her work is full of life and colour and is becoming
increasingly collectable.
Outside, in the Paw Gallery Garden
you sit on cast iron furniture incorporating elegant cats by Richard
Bawden while you admire the hand-built terracotta torso planters made
by Bebe Bird, perfect for showing off exotic plants. Altogether, a fine collection of craftsmanship in a
delightful setting – well worth a visit.
