The
Paw Gallery - Wivenhoe
Press
Release - 1st November, 2003
Imagine a world where fairies fly past you as you
enter, where porcelain necklaces whisper and chime as you recline on
velvet cushions to watch exotic-looking porcelain mobiles dance in the
air; where curlews prepare to take flight, fish swim on the wall and metal
insects stare at you with beady eyes … to experience this magical place
and see stunning jewellery, pottery, prints, embroidery, furniture,
sculpture and stained glass, go to the Paw Gallery in Wivenhoe for their Christmas
Crafts exhibition which opens on Saturday 29th November
and runs until Sunday 21st December.
Alison Kent, who runs the gallery, is delighted to be
able to include work by illustrator and printmaker Hannah Firmin who
graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1981 and is best known for
illustrating the covers of the
highly popular “The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency” books.
Another new exhibitor is Lucy Casson whose work has been
featured in The Times and The Daily Telegraph.
Lucy, whose work is in major public collections throughout the
world, has established a reputation for her little dramas made of wood and
wire touched with a delightfully true understanding of the quirks of human
and animal behaviour. Also
working in wire is Pat Cornwell with
her charming fairies who’ll be fighting for their place at the top of
the Christmas tree!
If its
domestic-ware you’re looking for, Pru
Green from Wivenhoe produces
beautiful hand-thrown colourful ceramics which are exhibited and sold in
galleries throughout the world and Sylvia
Dales who makes ash-glazed
stoneware pots inspired by classic form and Chinese and Korean art.
No exhibition
of this kind would be complete without its animals, so there are birds and
fish from East Anglian craftsman Stephen
Henderson, metal insects from
Artist Blacksmith Gary
Thrussell and slate fish from Tetley.
And, for that very
different piece of jewellery look out for Robina
Jack’s stained-glass earings
of Stephen
Galloway-Whitehead’s work in
copper.
Furniture for
the show has been made by Chas
Crocker whose graceful work is
mostly in French oak, whilst Mark
Dyvig produces unusual pieces
in crafted curving metal. Other
exhibitors are Sara Paynter a
potter, who specialises in slip decorated work, stained glass artist Rosie
Taylor, metal worker Jake Hussey who makes funky candle sticks
out of bike parts.
