Elly writes...

Back by popular demand! This corner of East Anglia is enriched by the presence of many superb printmakers, whose work I was privileged to exhibit in my gallery Printworks over the last fifteen years. I am delighted to be able to show the work of six of them this Christmas in Barnacle Studio, where James Dodds works.

James , well known for his stunning panoramic linocuts of coastal towns, trained as a shipwright before embarking on his career as an artist. Most of his work draws directly on his maritime experience. His touring exhibition "Shipshape" opens at the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich on November 24th.

Elizabeth Morris has recently had a very successful show in Ipswich. She is a very accomplished etcher who loves islands; indeed she lives and works on Mersea Island., where she is never far from the sea and boats ~ the theme for all the new etchings she will be exhibiting.

Daphne Sandham lives at Dovercourt and entertains us with light hearted maritime characters in her jolly and colouful etchings. She is in the process of producing a hilarious alphabet book based on acronyms such as SWALK and NORWICH, which was highly commended in a National competition.

Yvonne Skargon was bom in Dovercourt and now lives in Lavenham. She is responsible for not only the education and encouragement of the next generation of wood engravers, but a lifetimes work at her art, including the recently published book "Watermarks", which will be available with some of her best engravings and previous books at this show.

Glynn Thomas, from Capel St. Mary near Ipswich, must be the most popular and successful printmaker in the country. He produces delightful topographical etchings, often on a maritime theme, that are original, quirky and attractive ~ subtly coloured birds eye views. Barry Woodcock, an ex Wivenhovian who has emigrated to Brightlingsea, recently showed some of his fabulous wood engravings in Wivenhoe Bookshop. Even though he had a
most successful show at Printworks two years ago, I was so impressed by his recent work that I couldn't resist asking him to participate in this show.

All the work in this show is not only excellent, but affordable, useful at Christmas!

There will also be a selection of books with a visual appeal ~ "what good is a book without pictures?" asked Alice ~ from James Dodds Jardine Press, including a new book illustrated by James and written by Martin Newell: "The Waterlily", Primrose Hill Press books of Wood Engravings, including "Watermarks" and books and 2004 Diaries from the Redstone Press.
