Joan Gifford has taught fingerstyle folk
guitar in schools and community colleges for many years and is well known
in Wivenhoe as one of the people behind the thriving Folk Club that
attracts top UK and international performers.
As a child in South Africa, she played the piano and sang, but was
persuaded to to take up the guitar in the early 1960s when she was a post
graduate student at the Central School of Art in London. (Joan says it was because
friends got increasingly fed up
helping her to move her piano from one set of digs to another!)
She enjoys teaching (although she says that her students very quickly get
to be better than she is!) and also enjoys
performing a wide range of folk, popular and humorous songs.

Bill
Heslop
Bill is a familiar figure in Wivenhoe having not just taught art at the
Colne Community School but tutoring art classes for the Adult Education
College over quite a few years. Additionally, Bill started the Wivenhoe Watercolour Challenge in 2001. In
his own right, he is an accomplished artist; many people have examples of
his work hanging in their homes, and a few of us are lucky enough to
receive a hand-painted Christmas card from him each
year. Click here
