Exploring Philosophy

with Dr Alan Collett

Next course:  KIERKEGAARD AND THE PHILOSOPHY OF RELIGION. This will be held at the Wivenhoe Sailing Club, Walter Radcliffe Way, Wivenhoe for 10 weeks starting 30th September 2008. For more details - see below

If you enjoy discussing and arguing about important abstract ideas you might be interested in one of Dr Alan Collett's courses which he runs from time to time in Wivenhoe (previously at the Royal British Legion Hall on Wivenhoe Quay but now at the Wivenhoe Sailing Club, Walter Radcliffe Way).

These are private courses, arising out of the closure of Open Studies at the University of Essex. They are run by Dr Alan Collett, an experienced philosophy lecturer, who has taught for several universities and adult education departments and who now teaches for the Open University.

This series of courses has been running since 2006 and attracts an enthusiastic group of students of all ages to study and debate in an informal atmosphere, under the direction of the tutor.

Each term a different course is offered.  The courses are designed to be suitable for those with no previous knowledge of philosophy. To benefit from the course a student only needs to be interested in discussion with like-minded people. There is no assessment. All the courses have been very well attended.

Next course begins 30th September, 2008

KIERKEGAARD AND THE PHILOSOPHY OF RELIGION

In this course we will focus on the writings of Soren Kierkegaard, the 19th century philosopher, often called the father of existentialism. Each week we will concentrate on a different aspect of Kierkegaard's thought.

The aim of the course is to discuss the importance of Kierkegaard's ideas for the philosophy of religion. Kierkegaard was responsible for a radical new approach to religion which still has repercussions today: the idea that objective truths are irrelevant to religious belief and should be replaced by passionate, individual commitment.

The course lasts 10 weeks and will be held at the Wivenhoe Sailing Club, Walter Radcliff Way, Wivenhoe  on Tuesdays 10.00 am - 12.30 pm, starting 30 September 2008. The course cost is £72.

Previous courses:

Dr Allan Collett's first course that started September 2006 was on the subject of Existentialism and attracted 13 students. Click here for course details.

His 10 week course in January 2007 on Exploring Philosophy was also very well attended.

Arguing about The Mind:  January 2008

The Art Question:    April 2008

Much modern art prompts the question: Is it Art? In this 6 week course we will discuss some of the ways in which this question has been answered. The course will provide an interesting and accessible introduction to aesthetics and the philosophy of art.

The course is based upon 'The Art Question' by Nigel Warburton. This book contains reproductions of works of art from different periods and these will provide examples for discussion. The book is highly recommended as background reading for the course, although it is not essential for enjoyment of the course.
